November Library Happenings

by Peggi Beseres

November is an active month at the Jessie F. Hallett Memorial Library.  November is National Caregiver Month, please note the display near the front charging desk which features posters, brochures and several new book titles geared at helping caregivers in their role for providing for others. For more information on caregiver support visit www.lssmn.org/olderadult or call 1-888-242-0012.

Our popular Story Hour continues each Wednesday morning at 10:30. The staff has been busy sharing stories, crafts, songs and fingerplays with record-breaking numbers of pre-schoolers! Along with Story Time (pre-K) we promote Accelerated Reader (elementary through high school), Club R.O.A. R. (reading encouragement for grades 4-6) and our teen area CURBSIDE (ages 12-18) We are proud to provide these services to youth and young families. Recently the Library has been the recipient of generous donations from the Bay Lake Area Lions, Friday Study Club, The Homeschool Drama Club and the family of Charlotte Hall; these donations will be used to build much needed additional shelving in our Juvenile Dewey (non-fiction) area.  By working together we are able to provide an open anything-is-possible environment, the best of technological services, up-to-date materials and programming to enhance the Library experience.

Volunteers from the Senior LinkAge Line of the Central MN Council on Aging will be offering one-on-one sessions for seniors who have questions about Medicare Part D.  These 45 minute meetings are free and appointments can be made by calling 800-333-2433. Individuals will meet on-site @ the Library on Thursdays, Oct 30, November 6, 13 and 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Come into the Library and enjoy artwork by local artists.  Artists include LaVerne Seely, Joan Hallada, Donna Maves, Bev Abear, Karen Vukonich, Nancy Hetland, Joe Hennick and Leah Haas. These paintings are rotated seasonally and give an art gallery feel to our walls.

As our 30th anniversary year comes to a close, we embrace the Thanksgiving spirit.  We give thanks for our generous community, our access to knowledge, and the gift of the Hallett Legacy. Whether it’s Pre-school Story Hour, the latest bestseller, a new DVD, an Adult-Basic Education class or reference information that you seek, the JFHML is the place to visit.  Library cards are your free access to the world.  Make us a part of your weekly habit.  Our staff caters to the inquisitive and curious. Check out our web-site at www.emily.net/~jhallett or call 218-546-8005.

Engraved Memorial Shelving at Library

The Jessie F. Hallett Memorial Library has received inspiration from the Eugene Public Library in Oregon.  If a patron in Eugene Oregon donates $100 to their public Library, the Library will then place an engraved metal plaque on a book shelf, with a plaque naming the honoree/family, preceded by “In Honor of…” or “In Memory of…”

When you enter Crosby’s Library you will presently find nine such dedicated shelves. “In Honor of” shelves include recognition for our long-time Librarian Jeanette N. Smith and her husband Boyd G. Smith, also for Charles Wesley Potts White.  “In Memory of” shelves are in place for Robert LeBlanc, Elsie Craggs, Ruth Louise Potts, L.D. “Susie” Potts Hackney, Katherine Potts Macdonald and Charlotte Hall.

If you are interested in utilizing this bookshelf tribute, please contact the Library at 546-8005.

Book Donation Policy

The JFHML is always happy to receive book donations by individuals. If we find the book suitable for shelf use (sturdy binding, not musty, not a duplicate, etc.), the material will be processed. If the book is not one that we can use, we explain that if there are no objections, the book will be placed for resale in our on-going book sale in the front entryway. With this understood, if any patron would like his or her book returned we are happy to comply. We also provide tax-gift receipts upon request. Text-style books and other materials are often sent to areas in need of up-to-date information. In the past many donated books have made their way to Africa, China and Haiti. Everyone benefits from the donation of recycled reading materials. Please keep in mind that we are unable to accept books which are damaged, wet or mildewed. Please contact the Library at 546-8005 before dropping off books. Thank you!

Room Rental Policy

(updated August 2007)

Effective September 1, 2007, there will be a room rental fee of $10.00 per hour for the Large Meeting Room and the Conference Room. The small study room will be $10.00 for up to 4 hours.

This fee is for all groups whether you are government, non-profit or a school group. The only exceptions to this fee are Library sponsored programs/events (Adult Basic Education, Story Hour, Tax Help, Quillmasters, Library Board, and Summer Reading Program), or civic groups which give an annual donation of $100.00 or more to the Library.
